Getting in the habit of tracking your accomplishments is a key career management strategy to better preparing for your 90 day, quarterly, 6 month or annual review. Assessing your own performance and being prepared to share examples, results and career growth is much more powerful (and feels better too) than waiting to be told how you rank. By doing so, you set a better direction for your career, and you are more likely to get what you want.

“Kudos” is defined as “praise or respect that you receive because of something you have done or achieved.” Career success is paved by our achievements and accomplishments, which we hope are recognized – and rewarded – by those who evaluate our performance.

Making a habit of saying “kudos to me” is a great career management strategy. Why? It stops us from relying on others to determine our value. Taking credit for what we do well, even when not recognized by others, empowers us to set our career direction ourselves.

I love my HR network. For over 15 years I have been a strategist, co-leader, influencer and career coach for Mentor HR, an award-wining, competitive leadership and professional development program for HR Professionals in Northern Virginia. It continues to be a highly gratifying experience that I volunteer my time for, and I have a great network of highly skilled HR professionals, many of whom I call friends. So I thought this month, let’s show them some love and appreciation.
