It’s that most-wonderful-time-of-the-year again, and as you consider letting loose and cutting yourself some slack (or another piece of cheesecake!) this holiday season, consider the month of December as a great time to take stock of your career goals for 2017 – and then go after them.
Here are 5 reasons why you should get moving this month on your 2017 career goals:
- Most of my job-seeking clients think putting off conversations or refraining from sending cover letters and resumes to recruiters or hiring managers until January is the way to go. Now is actually a great time to stand out since everyone else will have the same idea on the other side of December 31st. So don’t wait to make that call or send that email – and don’t forget to follow up! You will have the competitive advantage and your resume won’t be part of that deluge recruiters receive in January.
- If the word “networking” makes your stomach churn, consider that during the holidays, people are in a festive mood. Decide to use the word “socialize” instead, and see if this eases your nerves in approaching someone who can help you move forward with your career goals.
- Even if you feel your resume is not up to par, or you are simply “not ready” to meet with someone who can potentially help you with your career goals, this is a great time of year to go ahead and meet with just that person. Sharing your authentic self over a peppermint mocha or a gingerbread martini offers many rewards, one of which might be getting some great feedback that will be useful to honing your personal brand.
- While some of us work for organizations whose busiest months are during the holidays, others might find themselves shopping online for gifts all week due to a slower couple of months. If the latter sounds more like you, consider working on your resume, researching an organization that excites you, or asking your boss to lunch to pitch that new idea – now.
- Tis’ the season of giving, and giving back. Think about someone who you can give something to; an article he or she might find useful, a small token of your appreciation for someone’s help, or a holiday thank you card to express your gratitude for help with your career. Not only does giving feel good, but you will also be remembered for your thoughtfulness.
Happy Holidays!!
