When my son turned 14, I said, “It’s time to get a job.” He looked at me and said, “It is?”

That small exchange (and admittedly one-sided) kicked off his very first job search—and reminded me of something important: the tools that help you stand out haven’t changed. You just need to know how to use them.

As a career coach, I guided him the same way I guide my clients:

• Start with networking (we found a lead at a softball game!)
• Make a personal connection (I asked the hiring supervisor about her story)
• Prepare with purpose (we practiced interview questions, a good handshake, and even a money question on how to make change on the drive over)
• Be ready to perform! (resume in hand, interview answers AND “do you have any questions for me?” ready)

My son got an interview – and the job – on the spot. But more than that, he began to understand his strengths. He likes to work. He thrives in variety. He’s a strong teammate. His personal brand is already forming. One day my son said he would be working late. The CEO was coming to check out the facility. All on his own, he decided to wash the windows to the entrance to impress the CEO and lingered after his shift ended so he could ask the CEO questions about his career.

To all new grads:
You may not have it all figured out yet, and that’s ok. I know I didn’t when I graduated long ago.
