My Career Challenge: I was very dissatisfied with my job and actively seeking my next opportunity. I was getting frustrated since I was not receiving any offers, despite countless interviews. I wanted to leave my employer as quickly as possible and join a mission-driven organization that valued my contributions and aligned with my values.
How Coaching Helped: Ellen helped me assess my values (which I learned are an important part of career satisfaction), create a targeted list of employers, and evaluate my personal brand. We also role-played mock interviews so I could determine where I found myself struggling. Ellen shared feedback that while my resume and LinkedIn profile helped secure my many interviews, I needed coaching on describing the impact I made in my current and former roles.
In our coaching conversations, we discussed what I didn’t want in my next employer as much as what I did want. I was able to craft answers to tough behavioral interview questions using a 4 step framework that helped me share examples of my impact with ease (e.g. “Tell me about a time when you resolved a difficult challenge?”) Ellen also taught me how to proactively ask during her interviews to yield important information on what it would be like to work for that employer. She reminded me that interviewing is a two-way street. Deciding to a new employer takes clarity.
Through preparation and role-playing exercises, my confidence grew dramatically. I showed up more and more powerfully I even asked for even asked for a $14,000 increase above a salary offer I received!
Outcome:
In less than four weeks working with Ellen I accepted a new and exciting opportunity working for an organization that aligned with my values in the healthcare industry – and my employer offered me a 23% increase in pay!
